The Georgia Avenue Community Ministry has a rich history of reaching out to and responding to people in need in such a way as to create cooperation, build community and honor the gifts, abilities and talents that people bring with them into GACM. This Christian ministry will serve anyone in need regardless of religious affiliation or any other difference. Our desire is to work WITH people as opposed to "helping," so that relationships are formed, community grows and people gain what they need as well as helping others to have the same. The Georgia Avenue Community Ministry strives to be an asset building community development ministry.

Food Cooperatives in the Philadelphia Metro Area?

On Feb. 2, Chad visited at the Thomas M. Thomas Memorial Presbyterian Church in Chester, PA to talk with them about their interest in the food co-op model.  The Rev. Richard Dalton (2nd from left) arranged the gathering.  A few of the participants are pictured above: Joe Henwood (l) of the Binnacle Reinvestment Group has long been active in efforts to revitalize Chester; the Rev. Dalton pastors a church in an area that has been hard hit over the years by urban blight; Crystal Showell (rt. of Rev. Dalton) heads the church’s efforts to provide food to neighbors in need; and Bill Clark is the Executive Director of Philabundance, a huge and innovative food bank located at the heart of the city.  The participants were excited about the model and we left the meeting with the the churches in attendance expressing the intent to begin to assess what they need to actually begin a food co-op.  Since Chad’s daughter has been attending school at Temple University in Philly, he has become aware of the vast need of the city.

GACM expresses its appreciation for the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Without ACFB, we could not do our work. ACFB services hundreds of organizations providing millions of pounds of food each year to N. Georgia and beyond, providing food at 16 cents a pound. Our hat is off to Bill Bolling, executive director, Rob Johnson, chief operating officer, and all of their fine staff. acfb.org
